Matti Hagelberg (born 10 January 1964 in Kirkkonummi, Finland) is a Finnish comic book artist, illustrator, graphic designer, and educator renowned for his distinctive scratchboard technique, absurd humor, and imaginative storytelling that often features unexpected juxtapositions and surreal situations.[1] He began his professional career in 1992 with the self-published mini-comic B.E.M. #1 Marsin sankari (The Hero of Mars), launching the long-running B.E.M. series, which has now reached its twenty-third installment, Avaruusvelho #1, and includes titles like Atom Tom the Abolisherand Zombie Justice.[2][1]Hagelberg has authored over 30 comic books and graphic novels, with notable works including the graphic novels Kekkonen (2004) and Silvia Regina (2010), as well as the sci-fi series Läskimooses comprising 14 titles.[3][1] His comics have been widely translated into languages such as English, Swedish, and French, and they have earned him multiple awards in Central Europe, including the 2021 Most Beautiful Books of Finland for his contributions.[1][3] Since 1998, he has taught comics at Aalto University in Helsinki, where he has led the Comics minor program since 2007, and his works have been featured in various group exhibitions.
