Christopher Wool took these photographs between 1994 and 1995 after returning to New York following a one-year DAAD residency in Berlin. They were all taken at night as he walked between his studio on the Lower East Side and his apartment in Chinatown. East Broadway Breakdown is the second book of Wool's photographs; the first, Absent Without Leave (1993), is compiled from photographs mostly made during the residency mentioned above, which had turned into a period of travel through Eastern and Western Europe and Turkey. For both books, Wool used 35mm film,
