Matthias Beckmann is a draughtsman. He meets his counterpart as a discreet dialog partner who then turns into a silent observer in front of the motif. Beckmann looks for places and finds pictures right there.
Since more than a decade Berlin probably is ? and that is something this series of now 264 drawings can bring to mind as well ? the most important place for current art production worldwide. And the 88 studios visited by Beckmann are only a small part of the countless number of artists? studios in Berlin.
This publication shows all the 264 drawings and it is published on the occasion of the exhibition "Die Kunst zu machen. Matthias Beckmann. Berliner Ateliers & Sammlung Columbus. Werke aus Berliner Ateliers? at the Kunsthalle Ravensburg / Columbus Art Fundation and of the exhibition "Berliner Ateliers" at fruehsorge contemporary drawings in Berlin and at Galerie Laurent Mueller in Paris.
